Samoa women get five guaranteed seats in parliament

3:09 pm on 24 June 2013

Samoa's Parliament has decided to unanimously endorse an amendment to the constitution which will allow five parliamentary seats to be reserved for women.

The amendment was discussed in the house before the third and final reading today, where all 44 MPs present announced their support for the amendment.

A two thirds majority vote is needed to make a constitutional amendment.

The change will either mean maintaining the current 49 seats after a general election, or adding up to five additional seats for women.
