Fiji now says it will send a total of 540 soldiers to serve as UN peacekeepers on the Golan Heights, which is an Israeli-occupied area along the border with Syria.

According to Fijivillage, the deployment was announced by the prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama.

He reportedly said an official announcement regarding the 540 troops will be made next month.

About a third of them are due to leave Fiji this week to replace troops from Croatia, Japan and Austria, who have pulled out due to fighting spilling over from the Syrian conflict.

Meanwhile, Fiji media report that the regime leader is to make a nationwide address at six o'clock tonight.

The subject of the address is not known.
