With solar power on, Tonga still awaiting price drop

Civil society groups in Tonga say people are still waiting for cheaper power rates after a 7,000-panel solar farm was installed on Tongatapu more than a year ago.

Tonga relies on expensive diesel generators for power but by 2020, the government plans to supply half of its energy from renewable sources to lower electricity prices.

A spokesperson for the Civil Society Forum, Pelenatita Kara, said the people have been positive about the project, but have not yet seen the benefits of cheaper power.

"Everybody's wondering is it still going? When are we ever going to get cheaper rates for the unit for price? Because it's still really really high."

Pelenatita Kara says more communication from the government is needed to better inform the public.
