CNMI Supreme Court halts proceedings against former official

The Supreme Court in the Northern Marianas has ordered the Superior Court to stop criminal actions filed against the former Department of Safety deputy commissioner and his co-accused.

Ambrosio Ogumoro and four others were facing trial on charges relating to a conspiracy to shield the former attorney general, Edward Buckingham, from being served a penal summons as he fled the territory last year.

The Saipan Tribune reports the Office of the Attorney General had brought the case to the Supreme Court, arguing that disqualifying the office from the case against Buckingham and his alleged co-conspirators was unconstitutional and erroneous.

The newspaper says the Superior Court now has to hold a hearing on the Office of the Attorney General's disqualification from any case involving the alleged co-conspirators of Mr Buckingham.
