A former high-ranking New Zealand police officer has been sentenced to 12 months prison in the Cook Islands.

Mark Franklin last week admitted charges of selling cannabis and possessing cannabis for sale in the High Court at Rarotonga.

The former Northland detective-inspector, who also served with the Cook Islands police force, was arrested with 12 other people in the country's largest ever drugs bust in 2011.
