New Caledonia unions unhappy with cost of living

There is growing unease among New Caledonia's unions over the apparent failure to curb the high cost of living.

In July, the territorial government made official a price freeze agreed to in May to end of a 12-day general strike.

The unions say they are not satisfied with the way the agreement is being implemented and are worried about the fiscal reforms expected next year.

A union leader has told local media that while politicians of all kinds are playing for time, there is a chance that there will be more demonstrations.

In May, thousands of people had taken to the streets over the high cost of living.

Two years ago, 25,000 people took to the streets in an unprecedented territory-wide action to push for economic reforms.
