Solomons praise for new Fiji constitution

The Fiji Information Ministry says the Solomon Islands governor-general, Sir Frank Kabui, has praised Fiji's new constitution as a win for Melanesians in solving their own problems.

It says the comment was made at a dinner in Honiara hosted for the visiting Fiji president, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, who presented Sir Frank with a copy of the constitution.

However, Fiji's political parties have largely rejected the constitution drawn up by the regime, which dumped the draft by the Constitution Commission in January.

The new document replaces the 1997 constitution, which the regime abrogated four years ago when the appeal court declared that Commodore Frank Bainimarama's interim government was illegal.
