American Samoa leader puzzled at leave accumulation

2:53 pm on 6 January 2014

The American Samoan Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga has expressed concern at the government's liability for accumulated staff leave.

This comes after reports that some employees have accumulated annual leave in excess of 1,000 hours.

Governor Lolo says he is puzzled that accumulated leave has reached this level when laws applying to government employees prevent unreasonable accumulation of overtime, annual leave and compensatory time.

He says obviously the government has failed to enforce these laws and it's time to enforce them.

Lolo has instructed directors to come up with a strategy to reduce all accrued leave.

He says excess leave won't be carried beyond October the first.
