Kiribati call to protect sharks

4:22 pm on 22 January 2014

A member of the group pushing for a Kiribati shark sanctuary says the government needs to do more to protect sharks.

Ben Namakin was responding to the recent release of a photo of shark fins inside the government fisheries building in Betio.

He has told the Kiribati Independent he believes sharks are instrumental in balancing the marine ecosystem.

Mr Namakin says government told parliament in August that there had been a reduction in the demand for shark fins following the closure of many markets in Asia.

But he says the photo shows this may not be the case.

Mr Namakin says he wonders why Kiribati hasn't moved to protect sharks as some neighbouring countries have.
