Unpaid overtime claims in American Samoa reduced

An investigation into unpaid overtime hours submitted by more than two dozen Customs officers in American Samoa has found the officers are owed close to 60,000 US dollars.

The customs officers had claimed unpaid overtime worth 120,000 US dollars, and had asked the equal employment office to investigate the claims.

The office reduced this claim to less than half of the claim, finding that the officers are in fact owed 57,000 US dollars.

The treasurer, Falema'o Phil Pili, says during their review they discovered some of the hours submitted were doubled up, while other officers appeared to work straight 24 hour shifts without sleep, which is not possible.

The treasurer confirmed that the review did unravel interesting methodology used to maintain overtime, contrary to the way overtime should be reported.
