A Papua New Guinea Defence Force helicopter is to deliver relief supplies to the islands in Milne Bay province hit by Cyclone Ita at the end of last week.

Disaster authorities say a helicopter left on Monday to conduct a survey to check on the damage.

There are reports from the Samarai -Murua district of more than one thousand houses and five thousand food gardens destroyed.

The survey team is also assessing the damage on Misima, Rossell and Sudest Islands so relief supplies and food supplies can be dispatched.

The director of the National Disaster Office, Martin Mose, says ten teams are on standby to assist in the cyclone affected areas.
