More time given to debate Samoa electoral amendment

6:21 pm on 16 April 2014

Samoa's parliament will allow a committee to hear the public's input into a proposed electoral amendment bill.

This comes amid calls by members from both sides to give more time to deliberate and not to deal with the matter under urgency.

Two MPs Papalii Niko Lee Hang and Maualaivao Pat Ah Him are opposed to the amendments which would abolish their seats at the next election.

The Minister of Justice and the Electoral Commissioner's office, Fiame Naomi Mata'afa, who tabeld the amendments, says the bill includes the requirements for traditional presentations, or o'o, to be performed after a parliamentary election and not the current practice of doing it before an election.
