Two dead in violent attack on settlers and students in PNG's Lae

11:35 am on 18 April 2014

A violent attack and fire in the Papua New Guinea city of Lae has left two dead, including a student from Bougainville.

The Director of Disaster and Emergency Services in Bougainville, Franklin Lacey, says he is in Lae today to survey the damage and re-patriate the body of Louise Taneavi, a student from Panguna in Bougainville.

The student was killed in what Mr Lacey says was an ethnic clash between warring settlers on a property that was ultimately set alight.

Mr Lacey says police are investigating the incident, but the deceased student was an innocent bystander who had been housed on the property with other students.

"Bougainville were not involved in the fighting, they were merely sandwiched in the situation. But a Bougainville student was killed and some others were injured by the settlers of the area. It's a settlement issue, not really a Bougainville and Sepik issue, these are people from the settlement."
