Fiji's representative to UN confident election will go ahead

3:14 pm on 24 April 2014

Fiji's representative to the United Nations says he is confident Fiji's upcoming general elections will be free and fair.

Several political parties in Fiji have already expressed reservations about the integrity of the elections, which have been set down for September.

And the regime leader, Rear Admiral Frank Bainimarama, is under police investigation for allegedly breaching the Political Parties Decree.

But Peter Thomson says Fiji has made good progress, with an Electoral Commission running, a supervisor of elections appointed, and political parties actively campaigning.

"I think that people should be very confident that Fiji will have free and fair elections and we will have a smooth transition to parliamentary democracy and that it will be something we can all be proud of."

Peter Thomson says he has no doubt the elections will go ahead.
