Two youths have been arrested in relation to the shooting of Fijian athlete Roy Ravana Junior in Sacramento.
The 20 year-old, who was in the US on an athletics scholarship, was shot early on Tuesday morning and died later in hospital, while another person who was shot is recovering.
In a statement, the Sacramento County Sheriff's office says two male juvenile suspects were detained by Detectives and have been booked into the Sacramento County Juvenile Hall.
The President of Athletics Fiji, Jo Rodan Senior, says Ravana Junior appears to have been in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"I think they were cleaning up where they were staying and there was some shooting and he saw someone lying on the ground and he wanted to run and help the poor kid that was lying on the ground and when he ran the culprit that did the shooting turned on him and fired and hit him and that's what killed him. You know the Fijians they've got instant reaction trying to help people out and in this case Roy reacted instantly when he saw someone lying on the ground and wanted to go and help but unfortunately it cost his life."
Roy Ravana Junior had represented Fiji at the World Indoor and Junior World Championships and was due to compete at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
He still holds the Fiji Schools 400m record set three years ago during his time at Marist Brothers High School.
Athletics Fiji will meet on Thursday to discuss what assistance they can provide following the death of Roy Ravana Junior in the United States.
