Fiji scholarship termination never about politics - USP

4:42 pm on 11 June 2014

The University of the South Pacific in Fiji has put the termination of a student's government scholarship down to a misunderstanding.

Tamani Seruiraduvatu received a letter from the Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Board three weeks ago saying his scholarship was being taken away because of political involvement.

Mary Baines reports.

"The USP says Mr Seruiraduvatu's involvement in politics was never the issue for them. It says a USP staff member wrote to the student to say his intention not to attend a field trip was inappropriate, and copied the correspondence to the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs and the Tertiary Scholarship and Loans Board. It says following the email from the university, Mr Seruiraduvatu did attend the field trip and when this was clarified to the Board, the scholarship was reinstated.

Attempts to seek comment from the Board as to why it cited the student's political involvement as a reason for the scholarship's termination have been unsuccessful."
