The United Nations Population Fund says it's pleased with progress being made to combat gender-based violence in Kiribati but says more work still needs to be done.
A 2010 UNFPA study shows up to 70 percent of women in Kiribati experience violence from an intimate partner.
The Pacific director, Laurent Zessler, who has been in Kiribati this week to discuss population issues with the government, says the judicial system has become more strict against offenders and awareness campaigns have been successful.

But Dr Zessler says the UNFPA will continue its work with different sectors to combat the issue.
"We are working on training that the police should receive in order to better address gender-based violence cases. We are working also with the health sector, women who have been abused. And also I met the judges that are implementing the law, applied in a very strict way."
Laurent Zessler says the UNFPA is also promoting discussion about gender-based violence and solutions to it at a community level.
