Disaster officials in Vanuatu have recovered the bodies of two people who were missing after a ferry capsized and sank on Friday.

The MV MGY had set out from Malekula, heading towards the capital, Port Vila, and sent out a distress call in the early hours of the morning.

The Director of the National Disaster Management Office, Shadrach Welegtabit, says 37 passengers and crew were rescued, and two bodies - including a baby - were recovered last night.

Mr Welegtabit says the bodies of two missing people were found this morning, and the search has now been called off.

The Prime Minister, Joe Natuman, has expressed his condolences to the victims and promised a full investigation.
