Sport: Team Nauru welcomed at Games Village

1:06 pm on 22 July 2014

With two days until the opening ceremony, Nauru's Commonwealth Games team has been officially welcomed into the athlete's village in Glasgow.

The island's final athlete arrived this morning, bringing the total to ten who will compete across athletics, weightlifting, judo and boxing.

Chef de Mission Dominic Cain believes their young boxers will be competitive but says Itte Detenamo remains their best shot at a medal.

"He was a silver medallist in the previous Games in Delhi and the way it's going he's really in good condition, but it all depends on Itte now because it's not easy at the Commonwealth Games".

Itte Detenamo is due to compete in the Super Heavyweight category at the end of next week.

Weightlifter Elson Brechtefeld, boxers Joseph Deireragea and Mathew Martin and judoka Sled Dowabobo are the first Nauru athletes in action on Friday local time.
