Sport: Guam lead Micro Games after day one

A dominant display in the pool has Guam atop the medals table after the first day of competition at the Micronesian Games.

The US territory collected 10 gold, 8 silver and 3 bronze medals, including seven 1-2 finishes, and managed at least one medal in all 12 events.

Olympic trio Benjamin Shulte, Pilar Shimizu and Christopher Duenas combined for six individual gold medals, and also helped the team to men's and women's relay gold while Jagger Stephens

also won two events.

Guam managed 22 medals on day one, with hosts Pohnpei and Palau not far behind.

Pohnpei's Reloliza Saimon won the first event of this year's competition, the women's 10,000 metres, with Magdano Marquez winning gold in the men's event.

Kiribati is the only competitor still to win a medal.

Basketball, baseball, athletics, softball, swimming, spear-fishing, tennis, volleyball and wrestling are all in action on day two.
