Samoa's Ministry of Health has issued an alert following reports of an outbreak of acute fever and rash in neighbouring American Samoa.
The alert is due to the proximity of the two islands, with the public being advised to try to avoid mosquito bites by using proper clothing, repellents, and bed nets.
A senior public health inspector, Seve Sinei, says it is still suspected the rash is spread by a species of mosquitoes.
The ministry has also strongly advised airlines and shipping agents to stop travellers from American Samoa who are diagnosed with symptoms of the disease.
People have also been told to avoid travel to American Samoa unless it is for urgent family matters.
So far, Samoa has recorded no cases of the illness which is spreading in American Samoa.
