Violence against women up in Fiji

4:19 pm on 24 July 2014

Fiji's Women's Crisis Centre says there have been increased reports of violence against women in the first six months of this year, compared with 2013.

It says overall the number of reported incidents was 1084, up from 1058 in the same period last year.

The NGO's co-ordinator, Shamima Ali, says although the increase is quite minimal, it must be taken seriously.

She says the positive to this is that women are slowly gaining confidence and are coming out to report cases of abuse against them.
