American Samoa reeling from floods

10:10 am on 4 August 2014

The American Samoa Government is submitting a request for a disaster declaration in areas worst it by severe weather last week.

The declaration would pave the way for assistance from the US government for individuals, businesses and the government.

About 100 people were evacuated after mudslides and flooding damaged their homes.

A 17-year-old girl drowned when she was swept away by a stream.

The government estimates the damages to offices, equipment, bridges and roads to be up to five million US dollars.
