Independent Fiji candidate to submit nomination

1:41 pm on 15 August 2014

An aspiring independent candidate in Fiji, Roshika Deo, says she is ready to submit her nomination to contest the election, with nearly three times as many signatures as required.

She says she has 2,790 signatures, which she will provide to the Elections Office today.

Ms Deo says collecting signatures has had the unintended benefit of mobilising young people and women, and bringing their issues and concerns to the fore.

She says standing as an independent will mean she can do something tangible for her voters, able to work directly with her constituency, free from party interests and hierarchy.

Ms Deo has thanked the political parties that had confidence in her and approached her to join them, and says she is looking forward to working with them as an Independent in the future.
