Closed Solomons mine hurting businesses

The Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce says the closed Gold Ridge gold mine has to quickly be re-opened.

The mine has been shut since the flooding on Guadalcanal in early April.

The owners, Melbourne based St Barbara, earlier this month laid off hundreds of local workers and has confirmed it is talking to the Solomons' Government about a possible sale.

The Chamber's chief executive, Jerry Tengemoana, says the mine's closure has had a massive negative impact on not only its members but the nation as a whole.

"The disruption to their operation has really affected some of our members and also the employment opportunities lost there you have six to seven hundred people who will lose their jobs."

Mr Tengemoana says the Government has to be more open with the people about what is going on.
