Fiji candidate eligibility case in court next week

5:00 pm on 29 August 2014

An application by the Fiji Labour Party to re-instate a candidate on the electoral roll is now expected to be ruled on the High Court next Thursday, after the judge called for written submissions from each party.

A lawyer and member of the party, Anand Singh, says they will argue that Steven Singh was denied his constitutional right and that the Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem, wrongly omitted him from the electoral roll.

The matter was to be heard on Friday morning, but Mr Singh says the judge called for all parties to supply written submissions by next Tuesday.

The case comes just days after the ballot papers for the September the 17th poll were printed, showing 248 numbers which is equal to the number of candidates.
