Tonga's Minister of Public Enterprises says he has approached the Japanese Government to speed up repairs to the water supply on Niuatoputapu.
New houses in Falehau Village were built on higher ground following a tsunami in September 2009 which left nine dead and hundreds homeless.
But about twenty houses in the village are not connected to the central water supply while there is concern the current pump is not able to pump water to the elevated homes.
The Minister, Sosefo Fe'aomoeata Vakata, says Japan has donated more than $100,000 US dollars for Falehau's plumbing repairs, but the work has not yet been done.
"It's just the contractor now that's a bit slow with this work because he's got other contracts here in Tonga and we have contacted the Ministry of Finance to please contact the Ambassador of Japan whether we can cancel the contractor's contract and re-advertise the contract."
Sosefo Fe'aomoeata Vakata says islanders have been relying on rain water to meet their daily needs and he wants the problem solved by the end of the year.
