8:02 pm on 1 September 2014

Solomon Islands' new police commissioner Frank Prendergast says his vision for the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force is a competent, confident force that is trusted by its community.

Mr Prendergast was sworn into office on Friday and takes over from acting police commissioner Juanita Matanga.

He says he would like to see the force on a more sustainable footing able to work with other partners but also strong enough to stand alone.

"I am really honoured to have been selected for the position. I intend to work very hard for the people of the Solomon Islands to ensure that I repay that trust. I really do look forward to getting to know the Solomon Islands alot better and you know, working with the rest of the men and women in the RSIPF to deliver a good service to the community."
