The general secretary of the Fiji Methodist Church says the capture of 45 of the country's soldiers in Syria is lingering like a dark cloud over the country.

Reverend Tevita Nawadra Banivanua led a prayer service last night at Suva's Centenary Church, which he says about 500 people attended.

He says the incident has gripped the country and many people are worried.

"To be captured like this and moved to a place where we do not know, this is a new thing for us. But as of now, the dark cloud of not knowing is difficult."

Tevita Nawadra Banivanua says many Fijians are proud of their soldiers and the incident has brought Fijians of all races and religions together.
