Solomons Parliament dissolved for poll

9:11 pm on 9 September 2014

The Solomon Islands National Parliament has been dissolved today ahead of the elections later this year.

The Prime Minister, Gordon Darcy Lilo, who becomes the care-taker prime minister from tomorrow, has indicated eight political parties will contest the poll, though the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties has yet to confirm this number.

All parties need to be registered under the newly passed Political Parties Integrity Act.

Some political parties have indicated to our correspondent they will not be registering, but their candidates will contest the elections as independents.

He reports those independents saying they will re-group after the poll.
