French Polynesia's territorial assembly has elected Marcel Tuihani as new assembly president.

Mr Tuihani received 38 votes in the 57-member assembly, defeating Antony Geros who got 11.

His election was expected after the ruling Tahoeraa Huiraatira last week endorsed the candidacy proposed by the party leader Gaston Flosse.

Mr Tuihani replaces Edouard Fritch who las weekend became the President after Flosse was removed from office as part of a sentence for corruption.

The re-alignment of the leadership caused by Flosse's removal is to continue, with Mr Fritch due to name the government line-up for the remainder of the government's five-year term.
