Last minute rush expected in Fiji poll

3:58 pm on 17 September 2014

A last minute rush is expected in Fiji as voters head towards the 6pm deadline for casting their ballot in the country's first poll in more than 8 years.

Earlier today our reporter Sally Round sat in as a media observer at a polling station in Nadi.

"By mid morning tempers were starting to fray in the searing heat and snaking lines outside the Korovuto school which is one of Nadi's biggest polling venues. An election official tried to calm the crowds, explaining they were short staffed, but everyone would have their turn. Three political party agents sat silently observing as voters moved slowly through, marking their paper, inking a finger and placing the ballot in a semi transparent box. The ballot paper of just numbered boxes was expected to be problematic, but in the booth voters could refer to a book of candidate names and numbers, but no party logo. There were few smiles, mostly serious determination on the faces of these voters having their say for the first time in eight years."
