Sport: Fiji pick separate teams for Oceania and Gold Coast Sevens

11:25 am on 23 September 2014

Fiji sevens coach Ben Ryan has named separate teams for next month's Oceania and Gold Coast Sevens tournaments, saying he didn't want to risk any injuries before the start of the World Series.

There are four new caps in the main squad for Gold Coast leg of the World Series, which has also lost last season's top two tryscorers Samisoni Viriviri and Benito Masilevu, while Pio Tuwai is out with a back injury.

Waisea Nacuqu and Vatemo Ravouvou are among eight players in the Oceania team that have previously represented Fiji on the global circuit.

Ben Ryan says the tight scheduling made selecting two teams a necessity.

"The overriding reason really is that I wasn't prepared to take the risk of injury or fatigue in Oceania with the Gold Coast team. [The] boys haven't been short of rugby - they've been playing all the way through the summer. I'm disappointed that Oceania tournament was the week before and not two or three weeks before to enable some really key preparation but some teams will put their main sides in but that's not we're going to do. We will give a chance to the boys that are in the next group to play against these big teams and hopefully knock one or two of them over and make things difficult for me for Dubai".
