Call for local focus by Fiji opposition

1:24 pm on 23 September 2014

The leader of Fiji's opposition National Federation Party says he hopes the government will assist parliamentarians in addressing local issues.

Biman Prasad says the fact there is a single constituency for all of Fiji can make it hard for MPs to focus on community issues.

Dr Prasad says it is important that the government help MPs across parliament take on issues around Fiji.

"Political parties have to work out how candidates elected under their banner are able to represent local issues from throughout the country. We do hope that individual candidates will have enough resources provided by government so that they can ensure that they are in touch with the people and that they are able to deal with their issues."

Dr Prasad says the three NFP MPs will work hard to hold the government to account.
