Sport: PNG sees World Cup hosting as boost to society

Papua New Guinea Football's General Secretary says hosting the FIFA Under 20 Women's World Cup in 2016 would help alleviate social problems in the country.

PNG is vying to become the first Pacific Island nation to host a FIFA 11-a-side womens' World Cup.

Dimirit Mileng says a sucessful bid would be a huge boost for PNG.

"The country as a whole will come to realise the value of football among the young generation. Like everywhere else we have our social issues and problems and football is a tool to assist with developing human beings so that's one part of it but also showcase our country to the rest of the world that there is potential for investment."

The decision on the bid winner will be made in December.
