The head of the Papua New Guinea police National Fraud and Anti-corruption Directorate says the spate of recent corruption charges against MPs shows corruption is a problem across all levels of society.
15 MPs are currently under investigation for white collar crimes and corruption.
The Maprik MP, John Simon, who was charged with two counts of false pretences and 38 counts of official corruption, is so far the only MP who has been named.
Chief Superintendent Matthew Damaru says corruption has taken on more sophisticated forms with the growth of information technology and telecommunications.
"The level of fraud and corruption in the country has risen from ten or fifteen years ago. So with the MPs being investigated, it's also an indication that there's corruption at all levels of society - public service, even in the private sector as well and the grass roots."
During the past two years, three MPs had been successfully prosecuted for financial crimes.
