A Papua New Guinea man has denied claims from the Prime Minister's office that he illegally leaked notice about Peter O'Neill's referral to a leadership tribunal.

Mr O'Neill has been referred in relation to a 1.1 billion US dollar state loan his government obtained from the Swiss bank UBS earlier this year.

However, Mr O'Neill is pushing for an investigation into people having access to information about the referral before he did.

His lawyer, Tiffany Twivey has gone on social media to attack Bryan Kramer for allegedly illegally leaking the story.

However Mr Kramer denies this allegation, saying the Public Prosecutor had formally served notice about the referral before he was made aware of it.

"And I posted an article in response to that referral. It seems that the Prime Minister and his office were not aware of it and made the assumption or allegation that I somehow leaked it. It was more of a circus issue to misdirect the actual referral."
