More than 400 candidates are contesting for 50 seats and a four-year term in the National Parliament.

Our reporter Koroi Hawkins says Commonwealth Observers were present to witness the start of polling and one of them reported the process looked efficient and transparent.

He says some parties have already begun talks.

"There are already coalition agreements being put together between various parties so there is one group with Gordon Darcy Lilo, the outgoing Prime Minister in it, and there is another group of about eight parties that are talking to each other, four on each side."

Koroi Hawkins says the counting process is expected to take at least three days before official results are known.
