Investigations continue into public hangings in Vanuatu

Police in Vanuatu are still investigating the killing of two people over allegations of sorcery on the island of Akaham.

The acting commissioner, Aru Maralau, says a 67-year old and a 40-year old were publicly hanged at the weekend after they were accused of being responsible for a number of deaths on the island.

Mr Maralau says citizens on the island met on Sunday and decided to hang the two men.

He says up to 40 people could be arrested for their involvement.

He says he's hoping arrests will be made by the weekend.

"It was a building where everybody convened and agreed that they should be hung and then they hung both of them in that building."

Aru Maralau says the hangings are the worst case of sorcery-related violence he has seen during 30 years with the police.
