PNG to build detention centre for overstayers

9:20 pm on 25 November 2014

An immigration transit facility will be built in Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, to cater for overstayers and illegal immigrants.

Local media reports that the facility will be built in Bomana, and will allow for the detention of people separate from the prison population.

The chief migration officer, Mataio Rabura, says there is a need to manage foreign nationals who are refused entry into PNG, and those who are in the country illegally.

Mr Rabura says the construction of the facility will be funded by Australia's immigration department.
