The former deputy prime minister of Solomon Islands, Manasseh Maelanga is reportedly in the running to become the country's new prime minister.

The Island Sun newspaper says Mr Maelanga has taken over parliamentary leadership of the Solomon Islands Party for Rural Advancement after Gordon Darcy Lilo lost his seat in the election.

The paper says the party is likely to again join forces with the Democratic Alliance Party to try and form the new government.
