Australian Greens call for release of refugee children

5:15 am on 1 December 2014

The Australian Green Party is calling for the Australian government to immediately release all refugee children in detention.

Its comments follow a review by the United Nations Committee Against Torture, which flagged concerns over Australia's treatment of refugees, including the detention of children.

It also expressed concern over Australia's detention of asylum seekers in off-shore processing centres in Manus Island and Nauru.

Senator Sarah Hanson-Young says the Committee has been unequivocal in its condemnation of Australia's cruel treatment of refugee children.

She says Immigration Minister Scott Morrison is needlessly detaining hundreds of children and his actions are illegal under international law.

The senator is calling on Mr Morrison to to respond to the UN Committee's findings by releasing all children in Australia's detention immediately.
