American Samoa senator wants probe of Filipino investor

A senator in American Samoa, Galeai Tu'ufuli, has asked authorities to conduct an investigation into the background of a Philippines-based company wanting to invest millions in the territory.

AVM Bernardo Engineering plans to invest 106 million US dollars to set up a multi-line food processing plant in Pago Pago.

Galeai says he has asked the Homeland Security department to find out more about AVM's financial status and whether it's a bona fide firm.

Galeai, who chairs the Senate Government Operations Committee, also wants to know what the government is offering AVM, saying no company would invest 100 million dollars without expecting something in return.

Meanwhile, the lieutenant governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga will lead a delegation to inspect AVM operations in the Philippines this weekend.
