The Samoa men's softball team faces an uphill battle to qualify for next years World Championships after back to back losses on day one of the Oceania Qualifier in Auckland.

The Tanifa were shut-out 7-0 by Australia in the opening match of the tournament before a 4-1 defeat by the world champion Black Sox.

New Zealand is in the box seat after beating the Australian Steelers 6-0 to finish the first day with an unblemished record.

Despite the three countries finishing in the top seven at last years World Champs, only two from Oceania will qualify for the 2015 event in Saskatoon in June.

The teams play each other again this afternoon with Samoa needing to beat Australia to keep alive their hopes of a top two finish.
