The impasse over the Solomon Islands finance portfolio may be put to a cabinet vote this weekend after the new prime minister Manasseh Sogavare failed to make a decision this week.

Two ministries, finance and police, remain up for grabs, with the finance portfolio being sought by Snyder Rini and Mathew Wale, who is understood to have dropped his claim for the deputy prime minister's post in the hope of winning finance.

Mr Rini is a former prime minister and has held the finance portfolio.

Appointments to the posts had been expected today but our reporter says it is now expected that cabinet will decide who should fill them.

Today is expected to be the last day of the first sitting of the new parliament, which was elected a month ago.
