Solomons opposition queries Police Minister appt

4:53 pm on 24 December 2014

The opposition in Solomon Islands is calling on prime minister, Manasseh Sogavare, to explain the logic behind the appointment of his new police minister, Peter Shanel.

SIBC reports the shadow minister for Police, Chris Laore, calling the appointment of the Central Guadalcanal MP another dubious decision made by Mr Sogavare in his first fortnight in power.

Earlier he had controversially appointed Bodo Dettke, who has strong ties to the forestry sector, as the minister of forestry.

In 2008, Mr Shanel lost his seat in parliament after he was jailed for nine months on an assault conviction and for the illegal possession of a weapon.

He went into this election facing another assault charge for an incident involving one of his constituents.

Mr Laore says with Mr Shanel due back in court soon it is ridiculous for him to be appointed police minister.

He says Mr Sogavare needs to explain the appointment to the nation.
