The Solomon Islands Prime Minister, Manasseh Sogavare, is defending his decision to appoint a man once accused of being involved in a $18-Million Gold Ridge royalty payment scandal, as the Special Secretary to the Prime Minister.

The Opposition and Gold Ridge landowners expressed their disapproval over the appointment of the former Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Mines, Rence Sore, claiming Mr Sore is yet to be cleared as a suspect in the Gold Ridge scandal.

However, Mr Sogavare says the Police and Public Service Commission have clearly stated that Mr Sore has been cleared of his alleged involvement in the scandal.

He says it's unfortunate that the Opposition chose to denounce Mr Sore's appointment without checking the facts with relevant authorities.

The Prime Minister says his appointment of Mr Sore is based on merit, and the Oppostion must be responsible in exercising its watchdog role, and carry out proper reseach before issuing statements.
