Chikungunya decreasing in Samoa

8:16 am on 20 January 2015

Samoa's Director General of Health says the country is finally seeing a decrease in the number of the Chikungunya virus infections.

Take Naseri says figures in the Ministry of Health's recently released report show a steady decline in cases of the mosquito-borne virus over the past month.

Last week a clinical services manager of the National Health Services told local media the number of people being infected had not slowed down.

But Dr Naseri says the latest figures show otherwise.

"From the numbers of the last four weeks, it's very encouraging to know that it's declining slowly. But we are still monitoring closely"

Dr Naseri commends locals for taking on board the advice in public health campaigns.
