Dengue and typhoid alert in Fiji's north

12:06 pm on 20 January 2015

Fiji's Ministry of Health has issued an alert about dengue and typhoid after a spike in the number of cases recorded in the north of the country.

Fiji Live reports Labasa Hospital has seen 17 cases of dengue over the last two weeks localised in the Macuata subdivision.

24 cases of typhoid were reported in Bua.

The Minister of Health Jone Usamate has warned communities of the need to destroy mosquito-breeding places and to take care with food preparation and hand washing.

He says the ministry will carry out chemical spraying but he warned it was not a long term solution.
