Mixed bag for Pacific: 2014 MDG report

4:14 pm on 28 January 2015

The Cook Islands and Niue are the only Pacific Island countries on track to achieve all of the Millennium Development Goals by the end of the year.

According to UNDP Pacific, the rest of the region shows mixed results, with Papua New Guinea being the only country behind on all goals.

But the UNDP Pacific's MDG and poverty reduction team Leader, Ahmed Moustafa says already the focus is shifting to the Post 2015 Agenda and the 17 new targets called the Sustainable Development Goals.

"We have more data available, we have large body of lessons learned. We have up to date base lines for many targets which we didnt have in 2000. So I would, I would say that we have a better chance of achieving the SDG's than we did the MDG's."

Ahmed Moustafa says on a global scale Oceania performed best in literacy, parity in enrolment for education and poverty reduction but has the worst figures in the world for the political participation of women.
